An everyday history of Upstate South Carolina from 1946 - 1950
I got all of the information on the page from the Spartanburg Herald Journal Newspaper, which I found online. It just gives you a brief look at some of the things that were goin on during these time periods.
January 1946- "A violent Death toll at 268- 139 victims of trafficaccidents"- The new year of the year started off at 6 p.m. Friday evening with 268 deaths. 139 of the deaths were from accidents, there was supposed to be bad wet roads from the weather that weekend. March 1946- "small hands across the sea- Junior Red Cross Wins U.S. friends abroad", by Glen W. Naves- Spartanburg County Red Cross workers are going across the seas and goin to help make our international driendship better. September 1946- "Housewives shop, stop to cast their Ballots". By Lea Fisher- This article was about how there were all kinds of different people comming and voting ecspecially the housewives. 1947 May 1st- The sales in the paper on this day were I assume a good bargain during this time, but to us these days would seem so cheap that cheap would not even be the word to use. You could get things like overalls $2.95 and coveralls for $ 4.98. Matresses were on sale for $14.95, bedroom suites for $99.50 and a box spring to go up under

1947 June 1st- "Clemson Students Anxious to Get Back to Farms" JM Easler- This article that I read about talked about how much cotton was growing and growing. How that in the year 1946 cotton had the biggest out put in the county through all of history at this time. They had even cut the acreage of cotton by 60% and that is was rising still so much that no one knew what to do. All the students at Clemson just wanted to go back home to their farms

1947- At a theater in Palmetto there was not alot of movies playing, to us it may seem because we can go to the movies and have a variety of different chioces where in the summer June 1st of 1947 there was; Mon- Thurs "The beging of the end"- News, and Fri- Sat "Vacatin Days" and "Half Wits Holidays". They also had people of a different

1948-"Youth Faces Charges of Murder"- A teenage boy who returned home face charges of murder for killin his two parents with a riffle. It is believed to have happened because he was running of with his sweetheart in order to marry. 1948-June 3-Spartanburg, SC- "Death toll hits 225" A memorial day holiday that was four days long ended with 225 deaths. 115 deaths were from traffic accidents, 62 drowned, and the rest were caused from things such as
shootings,stabbings, and air plane crashes. This death toll was way over what they had expected it to be for this

1949-"Children's Books to be Available at Playgrounds"- Spartanburg city school playground is participating in a program through Kennedy Library where they will have books available at the playground.It went iton affect on June 6,

1949-December- December, the month of Christmas. There was lots and lots of sales adds in this article. You could

1950-"Beekeepers Plan Meeting here"- "Spartanburg county beekeepers will holds its first meeting of the new year on Tuesday night at 7:30 at the county farm agents office in the post office buileding. 1950 in Febuary the new 1050 Lincoln came out and as any new car it was huge. There was a whole entire page with a picture just for the car. 1950- May "Reidville man hurt"- "GREER, April 30th (Herold Special)- A car driven by Cecil Gaston of Woodruff overturned around 9:30, causing injuries to Charles Wodd of Reidville, who was knocked unconscious in the accident in attempt to avoiding htting another car. 1950- October- "Woodruff's 8th Berkshire Event Tuesday"- "Rotery FFA Swine Project Grows; Lencheon Slated"- "The 8th anual FFA pig show will be held at woodruff Tuesday, begining at 9:30 a.m at Skinner;s Barn. 1948-"Short Stories in the News"- "Greenville"- To policemen are having to go to the state supremem court on Jan 12 in columbia to be tried for the account of murder, of a man from Anderson county on Sunday morning.
